The Theater Arts Career Academy, located within Tallmadge High School, is a two year College Tech. Prep. program offered through The Six District Educational Compact; its mission is to effectively challenge and prepare students who wish to continue studying the arts in higher education, while building employable skills.
Students successfully completing the academically rigorous two year program will earn up to nine credit hours, which can be applied to a theatre degree program at The University of Akron. Students will also earn two high school English credits, as well as a full credit of CAD. Every student will spend two years building an electronic portfolio, highlighting his or her artistic and technical skills.
Working closely with academy teacher David Obney, M.A. Theater, CAD/Stagecraft teacher Keith Bee, university instructors, and theater professionals, students will have the unique opportunity for an in-depth study of theater arts, using a holistic approach. Students will learn acting and directing, design/technology, and arts administration. English class through the academy will focus on history, literature, and criticism, with a strong emphasis on critical writing.
In the Theater Arts Career Academy, students will not only study theory, they will actively apply theory in labs, which are situated in a new, state of the art, fully functioning theater with a 650 seat auditorium, a more intimate black box theater, a fully equipped technical booth, a scene shop, makeup and dressing rooms, and computer labs.
